Approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board following a proposal from the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), the qualification system outlines how the 340 athlete quota places (170 men and 170 women) will be allocated across the 15 Olympic shooting events.
A total of 316 quota places will be earned through qualification competitions held between 2026 and 2028, while 12 host country places have been reserved for the United States and 12 Universality Places will ensure broader global representation. Each National Olympic Committee may qualify a maximum of 24 athletes (12 men and 12 women), with up to two athletes per individual event.
The qualification system has been designed in accordance with the IOC's Qualification System Principles, ensuring that the world's best athletes have the opportunity to earn their place at LA28 through a fair, transparent and globally accessible process. Qualification events will include ISSF World Championships, Continental Championships and other designated competitions across the qualification period.
The Olympic shooting programme for LA28 will feature six men's events, six women's events and three mixed team events, maintaining the sport's commitment to gender equality and balanced participation.
