The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) and the German Shooting Federation (DSB) are working together to advance sustainability initiatives during the ISSF Junior World Championship Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun Suhl 2026, raising awareness among athletes, officials and stakeholders about environmental responsibility and the role sport can play in creating a more sustainable future.
The initiative forms part of the ISSF’s ongoing commitment to align with the sustainability objectives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Through cooperation with sustainability experts and consultants, the ISSF is developing and implementing measures that support environmental responsibility across its events while educating the next generation of athletes on the importance of sustainability and climate action.

A key focus of the project in Suhl is increasing awareness among young athletes. By engaging participants in discussions around carbon literacy, environmental impact and sustainable practices, the ISSF aims to encourage greater understanding of global challenges such as climate change and the collective responsibility to address them.
As part of these efforts, the German Shooting Federation has introduced additional sustainability measures throughout the championship. Recycling systems for paper products and plastics have been expanded across the venue, while water and juice provided to officials are being distributed in bottles produced from recycled plastic materials. These practical steps contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of the event while promoting sustainable habits among participants.
The ISSF Sustainability Committee has also launched a dedicated sustainability survey during the championship. Athletes and event participants are invited to share their views and contribute ideas that will help shape future sustainability initiatives within shooting sport. To encourage participation, daily prize draws are being held for survey respondents throughout the event.

The first daily prize winner was Ioan David Matei of Romania, a competitor in the Junior Men’s Skeet event. Additional winners will be announced during the championship as more athletes and participants engage with the initiative.
The survey results will help guide future sustainability actions within the ISSF and will also be promoted through ISSF digital platforms to encourage wider participation from the global shooting sport community.
By combining practical environmental measures with education and engagement, the ISSF and the German Shooting Federation are demonstrating how international sporting events can contribute to a more sustainable future while inspiring young athletes to become ambassadors for positive change both on and off the range.
